Using Sequins to Embellish Garments

So you have a great dress but you need a «WOW» factor at an event. Simple sewing skills and some sequins can vamp up your wardrobe. You can find many sizes and shapes and color at an arts and crafts store. Sequins usually come as individual pieces and each one must be sewn on, or you can purchase single rows of sequins that are stitched together when you just want to trim an item. You may also find sequined appliques at some stores that can be a nice embellishment. Decorating with individual sequins can be very time-consuming so start on your item as soon as possible. To sew sequins to your garment, you should decide first on the placement. Using a washable fabric pen, draw lines or dots on where you want to add the sequins. Working from right to left, bring your threaded needle up from wrong side of fabric and thread the sequin upside down on the needle. Take a single backstitch by inserting the needle behind the emerging thread; bring needle back up, ahead of thread; as you pull the sequin will turn over onto its right side. Repeat with next sequin so needle is inserted at edge of last sequin.

Sequins must be kept taut when sewing but not too much or you will pucker the fabric.

Accessories That You Will Need

  • Besides sequins there are a few items that will help you embellish your garments.
  • Needles–The needles will dull very quickly. If it’s a very decorative piece you should change your needle often.
  • Thread–Use a strong, fine thread. Polyester or cotton-wrapped polyester are both good choices.
  • Liquid Fray Preventer–This is a colorless liquid you can purchase in arts and craft stores. Use at the beginning and end of each chain of sequins that you stitch.

After Care

Sequined garments are delicate and must be handled gently. Be very careful and protect the garment from harsh chemicals and direct heat. Garments should be hand washed using a mild detergent and cold water. If the garment becomes heavily soiled take it to a dry cleaners to have them professionally clean the item.
